In this guide, we set out some of those differences as well as highlight important similarities in order for you to make a more informed choice. If you’re in the market for a supermini, chances are two of the cars near the top of your wish list are the Skoda Fabia and the Volkswagen Polo. But which should you buy? Well, these are two pretty similar cars we have here! Not only that they both belong to the city car segment and utilize the same 5-door hatchback body style, they are even powered by the same Volkswagen-developed petrol engine! It's only details that could potentially make the difference.

Skoda belongs to the Volkswagen group, which means both these cars share a lot of mechanical parts. They’re also built on the same platform as the SEAT Ibiza and Audi A1. That means the engines and gearboxes are tried and tested not just among these four models, but among plenty of others from the four brands. Under the skin, the Fabia is the more modern vehicle. It uses a mixture of components from both the current Polo and the VW-group MQB platform, a version of which is used by the Golf an the Audi TT.

The Polo has been a popular small hatchback for many years and has undergone many minor and major updates to keep it looking fresh and modern. The latest version of the Polo features a sportier and more aggressive design, including a sharper front end and grille, a more sculpted body, and bumper designs that make it look lower and wider than before. It’s also available with plenty of customisation options, including decals and design-focused trim levels. Skoda designed the Fabia to be more understated and elegant, but the latest version looks just as modern and slick. To our eyes, neither of these cars are going to be winning a beauty contest any time soon. Neither of them are bad looking - indeed it’s hard to argue against the opinion that both the Polo and Fabia look like quality items - it’s just they both seem rather dreary.

Both cars have a good level of comfort and refinement inside, but the Volkswagen’s materials are a slight step above the Skoda’s in terms of quality. The Skoda’s interior has a sensible dashboard layout with plenty of physical controls that are easy to use on the go. Volkswagen uses touch-sensitive controls for the Polo on higher-spec models, which looks great but can be trickier to use on the go. You’ll have to go for a higher trim level to get more car tech in the Fabia, such as a digital instrument cluster, whereas this is standard on the Polo. Remember to check the exact spec of any car you’ve shortlisted because standard equipment levels vary with model years. It’s a similar story inside as it was out. Both are inoffensive but, once again, neither will set your pulse racing. In terms of ambience, the Polo just edges the Fabia, if only because the quality of plastics used is higher. They both have comfortable and supportive seats but the Fabia has a longer wheelbase, which translates to more legroom for rear-seat passengers.

Volkswagen Polo vs. Skoda Fabia: which has more boot space? From a practicality point of view, the Fabia is the one to go for. The Volkswagen Polo has a 351-litre boot, which is substantially more than you’d find in a Ford Fiesta (292 litres). With the rear seats folded, there’s up to 1,125 litres of space. Thanks to its clever design and emphasis on practicality, the Fabia has an even larger 380-litre boot, which is exactly the same amount of space as you’d find in a Volkswagen Golf - a car from the class above. With the seats folded, the 1,190-litre space isn’t much larger than the Polo’s. An estate version of the Skoda swings things further in its favour.

Is the Volkswagen Polo or Skoda Fabia better to drive? It’s clear that the Skoda has been engineered to make town driving easy because it’s extremely comfortable, has light steering and its suspension is well-tuned for our potholed roads. The Polo isn’t uncomfortable, but it does have an extra bit of rigidity in its suspension and slightly more direct steering that makes it feel a little sportier to drive. It excels on twisting country roads, but it's just as happy around town. Out on the road though, there is very little difference between the two. The Polo feels solid, comfortable and secure, without offering much in the way of excitement. Both cars share a similar power steering system, which in both cars is described as “inert” and “lifeless” by testers.

As both cars are Volkswagen Group products, many of the same engines are used in each. Most buyers tend to go for a 1.0-litre petrol engine and we think these are the pick of the bunch, especially with the higher 110hp output. They’ve also been available with 1.6-litre diesel engines, which promise extremely high mpg figures, but they’ve been removed from the order books due to reduced demand. The Skoda has a middling 1.5-litre petrol engine - it’s quicker than the 1.0-litre engines, but it’s not as refined. Claimed performance and mpg figures are identical when the same engine is used in both models. In the real world we find this hard to believe, as the Skoda’s more modern construction means that it weighs 75 kilos less than the equivalent Polo.

If you’re looking for a performance option then, sadly, Skoda no longer provide one. A vRS version of the latest Fabia won’t be produced - Skoda cites poor demand for the old model as the reason. Volkswagen still offers a credible rival to the likes of the Ford Fiesta ST and Peugeot 208 GTi. The Polo GTI recently underwent a mid-life refresh, introducing a more powerful 1.8-litre turbocharged engine and re-worked chassis. A slightly milder performance option is also available. For the Polo, there’s also the option of a 207hp 2.0-litre petrol engine capable of 0-62mph in 6.5 seconds, which is quick by supermini standards.

When it comes to fuel economy things look pretty much the same for both cars, averaging around 4.5 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (63 mpg), in combined cycle. The fuel economy stakes swing in the Polo’s favour thanks to the ultra-efficient Bluemotion models. The German car offers somewhat better performance, just enough to call it quicker. Škoda appears just a bit more reliable, although the difference is truly marginal. Some independent research have also placed Polo as average reliability-wise, and Fabia is more or less at the same level. Owners of different cars powered by the same engine as these two vehicles rank it on average as 4.5 out of 5.

The first thing to look into here would be the results from European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) tests performed on the two cars. Furthermore, if we'd like to consider vehicle mass in this context too, which we definitely should, the German car offers a marginal difference of 2% more metal. In my opinion, everything taken into account, the German car offers slightly better overall protection and takes the lead.

Under their different designs, both cars are very similar and both have a proven track record, which should make deciding between the two a lot easier. Skodas have always been marketed as the budget brand of the Volkswagen Group, and as a result they tend to be a little cheaper than the equivalent Volkswagens. However, due to the overlap of the older Polo versus new Fabia, the difference in price is only minor. Based solely on our wowsocres, the Skoda Fabia is the one to have. It represents better value for money, while offering almost the same level of quality as the Volkswagen Polo. In some areas, it’s better, too. If you’re after a no-nonsense, practical car, the Skoda Fabia has bags of appeal, but if you prefer something a bit more stylish and sporty, then consider the Volkswagen Polo. In fact, the only reason to buy the Polo would be because you want a more expensive-feeling car.
